PHED 252: A Holistic Approach to Nutrition

As part of the Holistic approach to Nutrition we looked how the food was produced, cooked, grown and all links along the way from farm to table. I took part in of assignments like cooking on a budget, food logs, diet changes, make bread from scratch and a movie review.

Through this class I continued my education into the realm of nutrition and got to take a deeper look in to the industry’s involvement in the food system, as well as developing a deeper understanding of nutrition.

PHED 132: Fitness and Conditioning

In this class I reconnected with my love of running after 3 years of being mostly sedentary. In a presentation I was able to share my knowledge of sports nutrition on meal timing around physical activities. I was able to push myself beyond what I thought I could do.

PHED 391: Research Methods in Physical Activity

This has been a really valuable class as it has given me knowledge and critical thinking skills that will be important in becoming an evidence-based practice. In this class I wrote a literature review on the vegan diet and its impact on endurance athletes.

PHED 352: Nutrition for Health and Sport

I have a passion for a healthy lifestyle, this includes physical activity and proper nutrition. In this class we look at the details of digestion and the food in general. This is a more of a science-based class and therefore provide a deeper and more detailed understand of nutrition.

I have tutored for this class for the last 2 semesters, first as a volunteer and secondly as a hired PSL leader. I have learned how to instruct difficult information in a way that is easily digested and understandable.

PHED 371: Organization and Administration of Physical Activity

In this class I learned about planning, organizing and running events, programing and business. What I have learned from this class is key basics that help me market, organize and plan for my future business.

PHED 222: Physical Activity and Local Food Production

This class taught me about local food production and emphasized the importance shopping local. I also got the chance to learn about how to grow, plant and plan food crops on many different scales going from small backyard to small farms.

PHED 351: Human Wellness

This class was valuable to me, as I was able to get a better understand of all aspect of health and how they are affected by the socioeconomic status, education level and environment. These will be very important when approaching the clients.

In this class I wrote a paper detailing the importance of sleep and how to get to bed on time. Sleep is important yet an overlooked aspect of health.

PHED 301: Advanced Anatomy

This was an amazing class. I was part of the first class and we wrote a online Anatomy textbook, I was responsible for the portion on hormones through out the body. Hormones are key to many functions of the body and can be a key factor in regulating health. Researching for my portion was a learning experience that helped me better understand how to read and convey difficult topics and make them understandable to others.

PSYC 333: Positive Psychology

In this class we learned about happiness, mindfulness, flow and motivation. This will be key in being able to support my own mental health as well as being able to help my future clients. I have already applied the importance of mindfulness to eating and how it impacts overall health.

PSYC 327: Health Psychology

In this class I learned the psychology that goes into the practice of health care, as well as the psychology that will affect the client’s ability to commit to changes. This will be important in my practice to be able to apply what I have learned to communicating to my clients and understanding their challenges.

PHED 473: Applied Field Placement Internship

This has been a challenging yet impactful class. Through this class, I took part in experiences that I would probably not have had the opportunity otherwise. Through my internship I have had the opportunity to see how the health care business works and the pros and cons of a career path as a Naturopathic Doctor. I have had the opportunity to work at a Chiropractic office where I have the chance that see the workings, struggles and organization on a health care business.

PHED 490: Directed Study in Physical Education

This was an amazing experience! We spent 10 days in Belize and taught physical education classes to at the Holy Cross primary school in San Pedro. I learned about international cultural differences, how to teach in a group of young children in a way that is fun in an unfamiliar and unpredictable environment.

PHED 491: Scholarship in Sport, Health, and Physical Education
